Hamilton 400 Podium for Gibson |
|
Fresh from his win at the last round of the Suzuki Swift Sport Cup final at Taupo, Castrol Scholarship winner Matt
Gibson tamed the streets of Hamilton to finish on the podium in each race behind newly ground champion Will
Bamber and NZ V8 driver Angus Fogg.
Qualifying in sixth position the Gibson team were keen move ahead in the 3 races and keep off the concrete
walls.
The opening race for the Suzuki’s was perhaps the best race of the entire event as there was plenty of action in
the form of paint swapping, passing and big hits. Gibson made a great start and found himself in fourth, before
the safety car was deployed to allow the rescue crew to pick up the remains of the Dunkely car after a heavy hit
from a mistake made in the chicane. Gibson made a great restart and got past Ben Dallas who made contact
with the wall and fell back in the field.
The second and third race had Gibson starting from grid 3. The Wanganui based youngster made solid starts in
both but couldn’t match the early pace of Fogg and Bamber who managed to maintain a small gap back to
Gibson.
“The Atmosphere and the circuit was such a buzz. We wanted to finish the season on a high and we did it by
getting on the podium in each race and also overall for the weekend. I met some of the V8 Supercar stars on
Sunday and enjoyed the whole weekend. I can’t wait to come back next year!” said Matt after the weekend’s
performance.
The Gibson team now focus on securing sponsorship for 2011 where they hope to come back and take out the
overall championship honours.
Special thanks go to Vivian Schwartfeger of Wanganui and Sarah and Aaron Pike of Masterton for helping
Matt get to Hamilton.
The Gibson team would like to thank their sponsors, Castrol, Video Pro,Firewatch Wanganui, David Jones
Motors, Suzuki New Zealand, Display Associates Wanganui, Kiwiwebs, Sinners Helmet painters and Chicane
Racewear, Tom Ditchfield Panel Beaters.
